New Year brought pleasant news to Novosibirsk astronomy amateurs. These news, first of all, relate to those who participated in astronomy forums “SibAstro” in 2009 and 2010. At these forums our guest from Taganrog Igor Chekalin gave very interesting astrophotography masterclasses. These were not simple classes because Igor is advanced in processing of astronomical data. His photos of nebulas, galaxies, clusters, the Moon and other celestial objects were repeatedly declared as the best at All-Russian competitions (www.astronomy.ru). For his work Igor uses telescope TAL-250K, which he received at “SibAstro-2009”. And now the international recognition has come. European South Observatory (ESO) is situated under the crystal-clear skies of South America – in the mountains of Chile. The sky here is considered to be one of the clearest on earth. 14 European countries have mutually produced the most perfect instruments for this observatory for almost 50 years. Each of the telescopes every night provides large amount of data – mainly photos of high resolution. ESO faced a serious problem – how to process huge arrays of continuously incoming high-quality information? The way out was found – to interest the great number of astronomy amateurs all over the world in participation. The competition was announced, and all persons interested got access to raw photomaterial. There were about 100 applications for participation in all. Igor chose for processing photos of the complex of nebulas M78 in Orion, Orion Nebula and cluster of galaxies, he devoted long time to search of raw data, study of new programs and processing itself. Titanic work ended by great success: 12 of January the results were announced – photos of Igor took first, second and seventh places!!! Igor was awarded the main prize – trip to observatory ESO in Chile! Organizational committee of “SibAstro” on its behalf and on behalf of the participants of our forums congratulates Igor Chekalin with outstanding result. Of course, it is not improbable that from now on he will fly to Chile more often than to Novosibirsk, but we all will be proud of him.
